A second photographer (also sometimes called a second shooter) is exactly what it says on the tin – someone who joins your ‘lead’ photographer (the person you book directly with) to work alongside them to capture your wedding day. Your lead photographer will choose and book them for you.


So should you have two photographers?! As with everything to do with wedding planning - it's your call! There's no right or wrong. But here are three reasons a second photographer can be a great addition to your wedding photography...

capturing the journey for both of you


It means you can both have your preparations captured if you're getting ready in different places. The morning of a wedding can be full of emotions, nerves & fun (honestly, it’s one of my favourite parts)- why should those photos be limited to just one partner? 

getting all those natural, candid moments


It gives you maximum chance to capture those candid interactions among your guests - especially if you've got a large number of people attending. I’d definitely recommend a second photographer for weddings of more than around 80 people. You can't be everywhere with everyone all at once - and with a second photographer you'll be amazed how many moments you have to look back on that you might not see at the time – the laughs, the spillages, the extra dance moves – they all add to the story of your day.   

the unexpected angles

It provides a different perspective. Your second photographer might be up on a balcony during your ceremony. Or hidden behind a hedge during your reception drinks. Or somewhere else that you won’t even notice, just quietly seeing things differently from another angle. And that’s so much fun when you look back on the photos from your day!
